Also

I recently added some photos to the "thesis/current work" page on my website, as well as two new pages called "life drawing" and "printmaking".  Just for fun.

Funny thing

During the past week I was asked by a mother to babysit her children last night.  However, I had too much homework to do so I gave the job to my roommate, Jenna, who gladly accepted.  When Jenna came back she told me how one of the kids kept thinking that she was me.  I thought this was so funny.  I work on Sundays at the nursery and watch both of these kids in the morning and Jenna said that the little girl was so confused that she thought she (Jenna) was going to be working at the nursery instead of me.

This morning, I got to see how confused the little girl was for myself.  When I saw her she gave me a great big hug and said, "I missed you".  I foolishly thought that she was referring to my absence during babysitting the night before.  However, it became clear to me that she meant "I missed you since last night" when the little girl called me Miss Jenna instead of Miss Monica.  The saddest part is that she has known me for two years and Jenna and I don't look alike at all.  I feel so replaceable and disposable.*

Love,
Monica

*By the way, this is the little girl that says she loves me and gives me hugs just to get cookies.  And she tricks me every time.

Flashback

I was looking through some photos and found these old ones from graduation (just think, in only a few months I'll have to make the distinction of which graduation I am talking about).

Vancouver

I'm alive, but the Olympics are taking over my life.  I'm also so busy.  I'll be back in a couple of weeks or as soon as something so exciting happens that I can't help but share it here.

Bye-bye.

Coin collecting

Warning:  This post may take a turn for the nerdy (or, relatively speaking, a turn for the nerdier than usual).

A picture of my penny (worth more than a penny)

So, my friends Alexa, Amanda and Nichole have gotten me hooked on the refreshingly scientific and surprisingly funny show, Bones, starring Emily Deschanel.  After watching a couple of episodes with them from the latest season, I have borrowed Amanda's DVDs of the earlier seasons.  While on my journey this morning, to finishing up season one, I watched an episode that involved the murder of a man from the 1950s who happened to be carrying some rare and expensive coins on his person.

Among these was the old (or wheat) one cent penny, specifically from 1943 worth about $100,00 today.  The value of said penny is so high because in 1943, due to the war effort, copper was in very high demand.  Therefore, the United States began making pennies out of steel to conserve copper.  Accordingly, found pennies struck out of copper from 1943 are extremely rare because they only made a handful (12, to be exact, according to the show).  However, I looked this information up on the interwebs, and a 1943 penny made from copper is very, very, very rare.

All of this made me remember a wheat penny that I had been holding onto since I found it many years ago.  I really like pennies for some reason and have a lot of them in my college apartment, but a lot more at home.  About a year ago, I wanted to find my wheat penny to show someone but I couldn't find it, fearing that I had spent it.  Today, though, I was inspired to search again because I've been known to overlook things.

And, after about ten minutes of flipping Abe's profile over to reveal whether or not it was the lincoln memorial or two ears of wheat, I finally found it and held it up in the air!  While I did not shout "Eureka!" or anything like that, I did breath a sigh of relief seconds before bring the penny close to my heart.  For, as many of you are probably wondering, I wondered how much my penny was worth.

The cool facts are that it is from 1958, with a tiny D on it (meaning it was minted in Denver, Colorado) and it is not that dirty at all.  It is also older than both of my parents and me, of course.  The even cooler fact is that it is worth more than $0.01.  In fact, it is worth about $0.03!  While I am disappointed that it is not worth hundreds of dollars, I wasn't really expecting it.  I am happy with the fact that it is worth more than most pennies.  I don't think I would have sold it, though, even if it were worth the amount of my college education.  Instead, I am going to wait and give it to some deserving niece, nephew, or small child (God forbid it be one of my own) and tell them to wait until it (the penny, not the child, folks) is at least more than 100 years old so that it may be worth substantially more.  Until then, I will be keeping it safe so that it appears as clean and as unused as possible.

Good day,
Monica

Feeling Weird

Subway from Lee Bretschneider on Vimeo.

I promise to start writing again once I get back into the semester grove.

For now I'll say that:  Art to Art is going well (Elisabeth and I have made neat, laminated schedules using clip art she found), my fish are growing by the hour, Stephanie is finally back in our lives, Jenna's got a boyfriend, I cut David's hair really, really, really short, my hair is growing at the speed of light, I'm still working on applications for graduate school, yesterday I started throwing on the wheel again and got back into the swing of things, there is already a lot of dried clay on my pants (which looks like mud and dirt to normal people I walk by on campus), my sculpture came back from Denver undamaged, I really like my art history teacher, I had to drop my installation class (sad :( face) for fear that it would interfere with my honors thesis, I feel very prepared for this semester, this blog is one year old (not today, I missed it's birthday), I missed Irina's "birthday" too, Jenna and Alexa got into NCUR which means Stephanie and I have the apartment all to ourselves for a few days in the future, I went to the gym yesterday and ran three miles very quickly, the ping pong tables were taken so I couldn't play yesterday, I can't wait until next weekend because I get to go home and celebrate my favorite holiday (Chinese New Year), I got a new kazoo after my other new kazoo was busted from me blowing/humming too hard into it, I'm waiting to watch a documentary I found in the library on noodling (bare-handed catfishing), and I'm finally taking piano lessons (I think I found my teacher on wikipedia).
